A Weekend in Savannah, GA (St. Patrick's Day)

Savannah is one of my favorite cities in Georgia. I used to visit all the time when I was younger because I have family that lives there, and I still go 2-3 times a year to visit them. It feels like home to me!

This is the oldest city in Georgia, and you can definitely tell by all the beautiful old buildings and even the atmosphere! People visit to learn about the history, and there are ghost tours all around the city, too. I prefer to just walk around and explore, so keep reading if that's you, too! Last year, I realized that I had never really explored much of Savannah because I would usually only come to visit family. One of my best childhood friends and I decided to visit and be typical tourists for a weekend. Every stranger that we met was super nice and you could feel the southern hospitality everywhere!

Weather: The weather is usually hottest from July-August and coldest from November-January. We went on St. Patrick's Day weekend in March, which is surprisingly one of the biggest St. Patrick's Day festivals in the nation! The weather was also perfect (around 74°F).

Transportation: I would recommend a car because that is the easiest way to get around, and there typically isn't much traffic unless there is a major event (like when I went). Once you get to the downtown area, though, everything is pretty much walking distance! You will likely have to pay for parking on the street or in the parking garages.

It was such a fun trip, so if you are looking for a quick guide to a great weekend, this is for you!

1. River Street

If there is one thing you have to see in Savannah, it is River Street. IT'S SO CUTE. This is an area along the Savannah river that is filled with nice restaurants with a view, shops, and sometimes live performances and events! It is always very lively and exciting. Also, you can drink in public and you can even take your beer to-go at restaurants! Everything is walking distance, and if you walk deeper into the city away from the river, there are super cute shops and boutiques that have everything you never even knew you wanted. My favorite shop in River Street is River Street Sweets, which is a giant candy store that I used to always go to as a kid. It always brings back so many memories! I also make sure I never leave without stopping by the Byrd Cookie Company to get some AMAZING tiny cookies. They have free samples inside for you to try the flavors, too! My favorite are the benne wafers. Get the benne wafers. A lot of people also love Leopold's Ice cream, and it is really good! But to me it just tastes like any normal ice cream.

2. Squares

There are squares all over Savannah if you continue past River Street. There's Oglethorpe Square, Pulaski Square, Lafayete Square, all the squares.. They mostly are all within walking distance of each other, and they are just what they sound like. Big areas of grass/fountains/ etc. Fitted into square shape. During St. Patrick's Day weekend, all the fountains flow with green water, and we saw rainbows! So festive.

3. Forsyth Park

I really enjoy walking around parks and people-watching. This is a great park for a picnic or a nice afternoon to read a book.

4. Wormsloe Historic District

My favorite part about Savannah is the trees! The trees are covered in spanish moss and it is such a unique part about the city! This area is a whole tunnel of trees, and it's so beautiful to walk through on a breezy day. People have weddings and photo shoots here all the time!

5. SCAD

I love art, and the SCAD (Savannah College of Art and Design) has an amazing art museum, and it was so fun to see work of so many talented artists. Tickets are $10, but only $5 for students! I would definitely recommend!

6. St. Patrick's Day Parade

I had never celebrated St. Patrick's Day before this parade. Savannah goes all out every year and has a huge party, and it was so much fun! I actually like being in big crowds and being surrounded by excitement, but I know that a lot of people don't like that. There will be sooo much traffic around the city all day, so if you like to avoid crowds, probably avoid visiting during this weekend. I can't wait to come back another year!

Enjoy your time in Savannah!
